The National Industry Skills Council (SkillsDMC) was officially formed in April 2004.
Stakeholders from each of the following industry sectors:
- Coal Mining
- Civil Construction
- Construction Materials
- Drilling
- Metalliferous
agreed to form one of the 10 new Industry Skills Councils as part of the revised national advisory arrangements for industry related education and training.
Business of SkillsDMC
SkillsDMC is a not-for-profit organisation with the primary role of facilitating the education and training needs of all stakeholders operating to these industry sectors.
We are a national organisation charged with the responsibility to develop and implement an education and training structure with the flexibility to meet the range of industry needs, and rigorous enough to satisfy educational and regulatory requirements across Australia.
Roles & Responsibilities
SkillsDMC’s role under the new federal government policy is to:
- provide integrated industry intelligence and advice to Skills Australia, government and enterprises on workforce development, including identifying skills needs;
actively support the development, implementation and continuous improvement of high quality training packages and other workforce development products and services;
offer independent advice about the skills a business may require, now and into the future, match identified training needs with appropriate training solutions and work with employers, employment service providers, training providers and government to allocate training places.
SkillsDMC will continue to liaise with employer and employee representatives to match up their training needs with the offerings of prospective training providers, including TAFEs and Registered Training Organisations.
Under these new arrangements, SkillsDMC will be responsible for:

Diagnosing the training needs of employers

Identifying suitable training providers

Developing industry Training Packages (including training resources)

Work with Employment Service Providers to increase labour force availability.
SkillsDMC Aims
The Board of SkillsDMC has agreed to a series of short, medium and long term goals, these are:
- establish an organisation capable of providing the industry sectors with the services they need and want;
- increase the uptake of competency based vocational education and training (VET) at primary, secondary and tertiary levels;
- provide data to identify labour market trends and gain support for our industries' fair share of the publicly funded VET;
- develop strategies for the financing of VET;
- develop relationships between governments, agencies, VET stakeholders to multiply our industries' human resources investments for now and the future;
- market and promote the benefits and services provided by SkillsDMC.
