  • Industry Profile

The Civil Construction Industry is primarily engaged in civil engineering work on infrastructure related projects covering such diverse fields as roads & subdivisions, bridgeworks, railways, harbours, sewerage and drainage, electrical infrastructure, pipelines and recreation works.

In November 2001(1), 711800 people were employed in the building and construction industry. Of these, 609 600 were full-time and 102 100 part time; 274 200 were employed in general construction and 437 600 in construction trade services. Of this latter group, it is estimated that over half will benefit from the coverage offered by this Civil Construction training package.

Employer representation in the industry is provided by a limited number of general or reasonably broadly based peak employer and industry associations and a further group of narrowly focused associations. The major general associations, covering more than one trade or sector include:

Australian Contractors Association (mainly for large firms)
Civil Contractors Federation (All size firms)

A significant factor and influence on the vocational education and training of the industry is the fact that firms of five (5) or less employees constitute some 94 per cent of all civil contractor businesses.

Union representation and coverage is, in the main, provided by the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) and the Australian Workers Union (AWU).
