Dear Colleague,
National Conference
SkillsDMC National Conference – 20 August 2008
SkillsDMC will host its fourth National Conference at the Four Seasons Hotel Sydney on Wednesday 20 August 2008.
The theme for this year’s event Tomorrow’s Workforce for Tomorrow’s Workplace is integral to our primary aims – enhancing industry performance through a well trained workforce. SkillsDMC’s ongoing aim is to work with our stakeholders to help them improve their business performance through the systematic implementation of industry based education and training. The Prime Minister, Hon Kevin Rudd and Hon Martin Ferguson, Minister for Resources and Energy; Minister for Tourism are invited guests.
There are an excellent range of industry speakers who will share their experience and wisdom with the delegates on how the conference theme directly impacts on all our industry sectors. We will also showcase Certificate 1 on how partnerships between key players ensures a valuable outcome for industry. The two major companies presented are BMA Coal (Grant Arnold) and Kimberley Mines (Tanya Turner).
We have a strategy to bring our conference theme to life and make every effort with our industry and VET Stakeholders to install performance related education and training to meet the growing demands of our industry sectors. With the change of Government in Canberra (last November) and its decision to inaugurate a new statutory body Skills Australia, SkillsDMC seems to fit well with the future. Our activities over the past two years to develop a national implementation strategy, sees us well placed to carry out an expanded role under the government policy Skilling Australia for the Future.
The conference will allow you to provide input into the continual refinement and development of SkillsDMC’s major strategic direction initiatives and we welcome your interaction in the Q&A and panel sessions.

Projects
Reframing the Future Project
SkillsDMC’s South Australian regional branch is currently involved in the Reframing the Future project. The project is based in action learning, with a focus on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The SA regional branch is keen to engage enterprise and registered training organisations (RTOs), both public and private, in the process and has already commenced discussions with several parties. The project aims to engage enterprises, with little current knowledge or understanding of RPL and how it could be applied in their workplace, in professional development opportunities. The project also aims to provide opportunities for RTOs who are already using RPL tools and processes to trial their tools to determine best practice components. This will allow RTOs to improve their existing tools through a critique, review and trialling process, leading to the development of better, more usable overall products in our industry sector. The outcomes of Reframing the Future project are not directed towards the development of an overall product, however, SkillsDMC SA regional branch will endeavour to produce a RPL template for use in our industry.

IBSA - New Training & Assessment Training Package & Development AQTF Auditor Skill Sets
IBSA – Innovations & Business Skills Australia have two new products available: Training Package for Training and Assessment (TAA04) Version 2.1 and BSB07 – Development of AQTF Auditing Skills Sets.
TAA04 Version 2.1 is designed to be a complete package of generic and employability skills required for success in Training and Assessment. It has been endorsed by the National Quality council and is now available for purchase through IBSA, the National Industry Skills Council. The changes are now available through the NTIS and RTOs interested in delivering the enhanced Training Package are able to order copies through the IBSA Bookshop.
BSB07 – Development of AQTF Auditing Skill Sets is a project designed to identify a skill set for AQTF auditors. However, early consultations have indicated that AQTF auditors engaged by both State/Territory and national regulators will need the audit competencies of an AQTF lead auditor as they will often be required to work on their own. It is anticipated that all skill sets will be validated and endorsed by the national reference group by the end of August 2008.
