Geoscience Units of Competency

Project Establishment and Initial Consultation Objective
To develop a new competency based recognition system for the geoscience field that provides career pathways within the VET sector and meets industry requirements.

Project Timeline

  • Nov 2009 - Project Establishment and Initial Consultation
  • Jan 2010 - Identify Vocational Outcomes  - Project Scope
  • Mar 2010 - Map to Existing Units of Competency
  • May 2010 - Draft New Units of Competency
  • July 2010 - Draft qualifications
  • Jan 2011 - Submit for Endorsement

As a result of extensive consultation and the need to obtain further subject matter expert advice the project timeline has been extended from January 2011 to August 2011.

Where are we now?
SkillsDMC has completed the task analysis for each of the roles identified and had mapped the performance outcomes to existing units of competency.  Through this process it was identified that the roles of the field assistants were quite well covered through the existing RII20609 Certificate II in Mining Field / Exploration Operations and RII30509 Certificate III in Mining Exploration qualifications, and that any additional requirements could be addressed through the normal continuous improvement changes for the training package. This includes some adjustments to reflect the requirements for oil, gas and CSG exploration.

The project is continuing and we have been doing a lot of work ‘behind the scenes’ with the reference group identified to assist with identifying the technical competency profiles for the occupations of:

  • Data technician
  • Field supervisor
  • Mud logger

It has been established that units of competency do not currently exist to reflect the performance outcomes for these roles and will need to be developed and then structured into competency profiles to make up qualifications or these occupations.  Further subject matter expert input from the oil/gas sectors will be sought to  ensure that these units and the qualification structures accurately represent industry requirements.

Where to From Here?
The competency profiles established through the initial consultation process will be drafted and distributed to the Project Steering Committee and interested parties for comment.  To develop the new competency profiles:

  • a national Exploration/ Geoscience subject matter expert (SME) group will be established  with expertise from the Metalliferous/ Oil/ Gas and CSG sectors
  • new units will be drafted in consultation with the SME group
  • competency profiles / draft qualifications will be developed
  • all documents will be distributed to SkillsDMC stakeholders and relevant industry bodies for comment
  • new units of competency and qualifications will be submitted for endorsement
