National Vocational Education and Training Regulator

Welcome to the January 2011 National Update from the national VET regulator taskforce. Bilateral discussions between the taskforce and states and territories are continuing so the national VET regulator is ready to assume the regulatory functions of state and territory regulators when they refer their powers to us. A priority of these discussions is to ensure a smooth transition for registered training organisations (RTOs) into the national system.

DEEWR Experience+ Training Initiative

The DEEWR Experience+ Training initiative helps employers provide quality training for their mature age workers, increasing the capacity of mature age workers to provide effective mentoring, supervisory and other practical support to apprentices and trainees in the workplace.

New WorkCover NSW Guidelines

WorkCover NSW has new arrangements for licensing requirements for other loadshifting classes in New South Wales, from 1 October 2010.

New Benchmarks for AQTF Trainers and Assessors

Following the May 2010 endorsement of the TAE10 Training and Education Training Package, the NQC has reviewed and updated its policy on the competencies to be held by trainers and assessors under the AQTF.

New SkillsDMC Resources & Infrastructure ITAB (NSW)

SkillsDMC has a three year contract to act as the Resources & Infrastructure Industry Training Advisory Body for DET NSW (R&IITAB). This supersedes the Mining Industry Skills Associations (MISA) which previously carried out these arrangements.

EBPPP: SkillsDMC Media release

SkillsDMC has been granted $4.9 million to fund training places for existing workers, from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) under the Enterprise Based Productivity Places Program (EBPPP). SkillsDMC’s national network of industry skills advisors will work with enterprises to coordinate and deliver the training places.

New Licences Come Under Mutual Recognition

The signing of the Mutual Recognition (Maritime and Other Occupations) Declaration 2009 has resulted in a number of new occupational licensed areas recognised as equivalent across Australia.

Government joins industry with $50 million for more training places

Media release | 29 March 2010 | The Minister for Education and Employment, Julia Gillard, today announced the Australian Government will co-fund almost 11,000 extra training places for existing workers in small, medium and large business to boost skills in high demand.

Strengthened Standards - AQTF 2010

The recent COAG meeting saw the endorsement of new AQTF 2010 Standards. In early February 2010, NARA will host a workshop for the NARA Auditors to discuss the AQTF 2010 Standards and work towards a consistent approach to interpretation and implementation.

Vocational Education and Training Reform

The New National VET Regulator - On 7 December 2009, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to establish a national regulator for VET. This announcement is, in part, due to requests from the Australian VET sector, for nationally consistent regulatory arrangements.

Consultation - National Standardisation Strategy

The National Standards Advisory Committee has developed a consultation paper. Stakeholders are invited to comment on the Strategy.
