Development of a resource for employees transitioning to supervisory positions.

The resource will support these employees to develop the communication skills that are an essential component of the work of front line managers. The product will consist of a core or generic resource with supplementary materials and activities as required to support the LLN macroskills of learning strategies, oral communication, reading and writing and numeracy.

The resource will be an interactive CD ROM designed as a mini website. It will consist of a central resource hub with a series of pathways. The central hub will focus on the generic communication skills required by frontline managers. A range of digital stories and/or video clips will be included. These will relate to specific sectors. Pathways leading to specific learning areas will contain a range of interactive and work based activities.

The need for such a resource was initially identified in Moving Forward - a workplace communication strategy for the asphalt industry (WELL 2003) and highlighted again in the SkillsDMC Workplace Communication Action Plan. Civil Training Queensland (CTQ) also identified communication as an issue in their report "Literacy in the construction industry". They have developed some materials such as Developing people and have indicated that they will make these available for use as appropriate. Consultation in Northern Territory indicated the need for resources to support indigenous workers moving into supervisory positions.
