Cairns Based Fly-in-Fly Out Pilot Project

SkillsDMC, the National Industry Skills Council for the Resource and Infrastructure industry, has been funded by the Commonwealth Government to establish a Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) coordinator position in Cairns.

The FIFO role involves:

  • Identifying the potential FIFO workforce in the Cairns region and establishing a pathway to link this workforce to mining, construction and infrastructure job required by existing and emerging resource projects in northern and western Australia;
  • Working with resource enterprises, local employment services providers and registered training organisations to facilitate the selection and gap training of unemployed FIFO job seekers;
  • Linking mining companies with airline and airport services to facilitate the connection of FIFO workers to remote worksites.

The two-year pilot project is a key recommendation from the  National Resources Sector Employment Taskforce and forms part of the National Resource Sector Workforce Strategy launched in March 2011 by the Commonwealth Government.
