A training program across three industries that helps to build strong and sustainable regional communities
SkillsDMC, AgriFood Skills Australia and the NSW Department of Education & Training have jointly run a pilot training program in the North West NSW regional area. This training model is designed to provide people who live in regional areas with cross-industry skills that are useful to obtain local jobs, and also offer flexibility of employment for seasonal activities. These include job seekers, long-term unemployed, school leavers, Indigenous and disadvantaged individuals who would otherwise find obtaining employment in their communities difficult.
The program has been trialled in Narrabri and offers skills training in three areas that are relevant to local industries:
- Mining
- Agriculture
- Local government/civil infrastructure

The training was delivered by TAFE NSW - New England Institute to 10 participants and includes both on-the-job and off-the-job training. The candidates have achieved skills in mining, agriculture and local government/civil construction, and qualifications from 2 national Training Packages:
Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package
RII20109 Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation
Rural Production Training Package
RTE20703 Statement of Attainment towards Certificate II in Rural Operations
The participants also completed a number of licensing requirements, such as senior first aid, licence to operate a forklift truck, licence to transport, handle and store chemicals, making them job-ready and adaptable to employment opportunities arising from increased demand for skills throughout the region.
