Tomorrow's Workforce for Tomorrow's Workplace
The 4th National SkillsDMC Conference was held in Sydney at the Four Seasons Hotel on Wednesday 20 August 2008 and was attended by senior industry operators representing the Resources and Infrastructure sectors from across all regions of Australia in outstanding numbers.
Hon Brendan O'Connor MP Minister for Employment Participation officially opened the conference.
On the day Michael Pascoe, mining economics commentator, introduced an extensive list of industry leaders who presented papers and answered delegates' questions on the day. Leading presenters included John Smith - CEO, BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA); Chris White - CEO, Civil Contractors Federaton; Tony Maher - General President, CFMEU; Dr Mairead Dempsey - Training Manager, Civil Contractors Federation; Norman Jennings - Chairman, NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council; Keith Spence - Director, Skills Australia; Craig Robertson - Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR); Grant Arnold - BMA Coal; Tanya Turner - Kimberley Diamond Company and Michael Olgilvie - SMYL. The conference dinner was attended by a capacity list of delegates in the Grand Ballroom.
Highlight - the two DVD presentations of Certificate 1 in Resources and Infrastructure programs were a highlight of the day as it showcased the future generation of workers for our industry. The theme for the Conference this year "Tomorrow's Workforce for Tomorrow's Workplace" reflects the continuing success of our industry sectors and how this affects the future attraction and retention of skilled workers in our areas of operation. The theme is integral to one of SkillsDMC's primary aims - Enhancing Industry Performance through a well trained workforce. SkillsDMC's ongoing aim is to work with our stakeholders to help them improve their business performance through the systematic implementation of industry based education and training.
