Sustainability - its impact on your workforce planning and development

This year saw the largest ever turn out for the SkillsDMC National Conference, with the room filled to capacity.  The impressive increase in delegate numbers reflects the ever growing importance of this event for the Resources and Infrastructure sectors.

On the day the Hon. Gary Gray, AO MP opened the conference in his capacity as Chair of the National Resource Sector Employment Taskforce. 

There were two keynote addresses delivered.  The first was by Dr Craig Stegman, Managing Director, Northparkes Mines, Rio Tinto and the second was by Paul Howes, National Secretary, The Australian Workers’ Union.

The MC on the day was Michael Pascoe, mining economics commentator, who introduced an extensive list of industry leaders who presented papers and answered delegates' questions. Leading presenters included: Dr Ruth Shean, Director General, Department of Training and Workforce Development (WA); Antony Sprigg, Principal Sustainability & Climate Change, GHD/AGIC Scheme Project Manager; Linda White, Branch Manager of Industry Workforce Development Branch DEEWR; Philip Bullock, Chair of Skills Australia; and Francesca Beddie, General Manager, Research NCVER.

There were three showcasing seasons on the day, which included: Dow Jones Sustainability Index, presented by Paul Ritchie, Principal Environment Advisor, Newmont Asia Pacific; Where to from here? Upskilling a workforce, presented by Peter Gasic, Maintenance Manager, Southern Road Services, Main Roads WA; and reasserting the Resource sector in schools – an Oresome Approach, presented by Katrina-Lee Jones, Manager Education Strategies and Services, Queensland Resources Council (QRC).
