New report released - The Australian Coal Industry-adding value to the Australian Economy

The Australian Coal Association released a paper today which shows the role of coal in the Australian economy. Findings included that the ‘coal economy’ made up 3.1 per cent of gross value added (worth around $43 billion) in 2011-12 rising by 18.25 per cent since 2006-07. As well as  for every job created in coal mining, 3.7 jobs are created nationally in the Australian economy, making up a direct and indirect workforce of more than 180,000 people in 2011-12. Training and education activity in the minerals sector

The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) commissioned the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) to undertake a study investigating the contributions of minerals operators to training. The Australian mining industry spent almost $1.15 billion training people for work in the last financial year, the first comprehensive study of the sector's contribution to vocational education shows. Analysis of the Long Distance Commuter Workforce Across Australia

Less than a quarter of Australia’s Fly in Fly Out (FIFO) and Drive in Drive Out (DIDO) workforce is directly employed in the mining industry, the first ever study of long distance commuting has revealed. The KPMG study for the Minerals Council of Australia, the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association and SkillsDMC, shows that more people LDC to Australia’s capital cities than to work in Australia’s nine mining regions. The Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency (AWPA) has developed Future focus, 2013 National Workforce Development Strategy.

The vision of the strategy is to realise Australia’s growth potential through a highly skilled and adaptable workforce, where skills are being used effectively to meet the needs of industry, and individuals are able to fulfil their potential. A study by KPMG for the Minerals Council of Australia and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) compiles basic demographic profiles of the resident population in Australia's nine main mining and resource regions for the first time. State Growth Outlook 2013 - The Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA

The State Growth Outlook provides data on the expected demand arising from growth in the resources sector through to 2023, where possible identifying implications for international competitiveness, government investment and planning and liveability. This is the third iteration following previous studies in 2009 and 2011. The outlook in this study uses 2012 as a base year.
