Strategic Industry Engagement
SkillsDMC engages with industry to determine qualifications and skill needs relevant to industry requirements. It is through this engagement that issues arise which see a need to develop or amend qualifications and skill sets within the Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package.
These issues are resolved through the activity of five Sector Standing Chairs and their Committees (SSC). These Committees comprise of a Chair, alternate chair, union representative and key industry participants.
The SSC may resolve an issue through two method, the first, via committee consultation and research process. Secondly, through the engagement of an Expert Panel and Expert Reference Group. This group are industry experts who are called upon to carry out research, industry consultation and analysis and in essence support in the continuous improvement of the Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package.
Sector Standing Committees
The work of SkillsDMC covers five industry sectors: metalliferous mining, coal mining, civil infrastructure, drilling and quarrying (extractive). The competency recognition framework covering all five sectors is held within the Resources and Infrastructure Industry (RII) Training Package.
To ensure that sectoral advice is obtained the SkillsDMC Board has invited each sector to establish a Sector Standing Committee. These Committees play a vital role in the identification of strategic advice to the Board and a leadership role in the continuous improvement of the RII Training Package. A key aspect of the latter role is to ensure that there is cross-sectoral reference applied to coordinate improvement to the Training Package.

Expert Panel and Reference Groups
One of the roles of the Sector Standing Committee Chairs is to establish Reference Groups to examine and recommend action on issues that are raised through the continuous improvement of the Industry Training Package. Previously there were 5 Training Package Working Parties formed to perform those tasks. With a wider scope and the greater potential for cross-sectoral reference an Expert Panel is being formed. This Panel will comprise membership of suitably qualified individuals, some of whom may be called on from time to time to form Reference Groups to address specific issues and make recommendations to the Sector Standing Committees. Reference Groups will be formed for the life of the task.
